Black
Comedy, by Peter Shaffer. This farce with a twist opens with
the stage in complete darkness - perhaps a bit unsettling for the
audience, although the actors seem not to have noticed! However, all
becomes clear. When a main fuse blows as part of the action, the lights
come up, and we can see everything - but the characters on stage
continue as if they are now in blackness. Fast physical comedy follows.
The
Real Inspector Hound, by Tom Stoppard. Right from the start
(which is a pause) to its final utterance, every word of The Real
Inspector Hound is chosen with Stoppard’s usual meticulous
precision to create a dazzling blur over the edge between reality and
fantasy – with a lot of laughs
included. In this play-outside-a-play,
two theatre critics are watching a thriller; but the pretensions of the
critics and the conventions of the thriller are interwoven and jumbled
when one of the critics answers the phone on stage between scenes ...
